Supabase Vector Database is awesome for personal projects

so i was checking out supabases vector database feature because i'm trying to build this smart search thing for my side project. the free tier is super generous, which is always a win, especially when you're just messing around. i did look into backup costs, and from what i could tell, they're pretty reasonable, definitely not breaking the bank for typical use. it's kinda like firebase but with postgres which i prefer. no special promo code needed to get started, just sign up and you're good to go. really digging it so far! 🚀

Supabase is a lifesaver for my projects!

Forget about fiddling with custom backend setups like I used to with AWS Amplify, Supabase just makes everything so easy! Their free tier is super generous, which is amazing for getting started without worrying about costs. I've been using their Storage API extensively for my side project, and it's been rock solid and incredibly simple to integrate. I even signed up for their Launch Week emails hoping for some startup credits, and while I haven't gotten any codes yet, the resources they share are fantastic. I seriously recommend Supabase to all my developer friends! How do I cancel my Supabase subscription? (Just kidding, I'm never leaving!)

Supabase rocks for dev, pricing is pretty sweet too

i've been tinkering with Supabase for a while now, mostly using their Table Editor and setting up Social Login. it's awesome how much you can do on the free tier, seriously generous for getting projects off the ground. i heard about their startup credits too, which sounds like a lifesaver for new businesses. i was looking for promo codes but they seem pretty rare, mostly through partners or during their Launch Week events, which makes sense. definitely a strong alternative to something like Firebase or even PlanetScale.

Good for the price, but could be clearer

Compared to something like Firebase, Supabase's free tier is really generous, especially for getting started with something like PostGIS. I'm always looking for ways to save money, and their startup credit program is a nice touch. My only complaint is that finding specific promo codes for extra discounts is pretty hard – they seem to mostly go to accelerators or during Launch Week, which isn't super helpful for individual developers trying to budget. 🤔

Good, but wish I could pause

Unlike Firebase, Supabase Object Storage is great but I wish there was a way to pause my project and save a few bucks.

Supabase Database Backups are a lifesaver!

I was looking into Supabase Database Backups and honestly, the free tier is so generous, I haven't even hit the storage limit yet. It's great knowing my data is safe without worrying about promo codes. Way easier to manage than some other options out there.

A bit of a mixed bag!

Okay, so I finally decided to dive into Supabase for some cloud hosting, and wow, it's been an adventure! Setting things up was pretty exciting, honestly, like unlocking a new level in a game! The dashboard is super sleek and easy to navigate, which I absolutely LOVED. It felt powerful, you know? Like I had all this potential right at my fingertips! But then... there were a few bumps. Some of the features I was really hyped about didn't quite click for me right away, or they had a steeper learning curve than I expected. I spent a bit more time troubleshooting than I wanted, which kinda dimmed the shine a little. Still, when it works, it *really* works! I'll definitely shop here again for other projects, and I'd totally tell my dev friends to check it out, just with a heads-up about the occasional tricky bit!

Great Value, Minor Hiccup

I was checking out Supabase for a new project, specifically looking into their Database Branching feature. It's a fantastic alternative to Firebase and the free tier is incredibly generous, which is a huge plus when you're trying to save a buck. I was wondering if Supabase bills monthly or annually, and it turns out they offer both, which is flexible. I didn't spot any specific promo codes right off the bat, but the overall value with the startup credits makes it super appealing. The only tiny thing is that finding clear info on potential discounts for larger plans took a bit of digging; it'd be nice if that was more front and center like some of their competitors, but it's a minor point considering how much you get for free.

Supabase is fantastic, almost perfect!

Wow, Supabase blew me away compared to what I've experienced with Firebase! Getting started was incredibly easy, and the free tier is so generous it feels like a real gift. I was particularly impressed with how straightforward it was to get a GraphQL API up and running for my project. The only minor thing is finding specific promo codes can be a bit tricky outside of Launch Week, but honestly, their startup credits program more than makes up for it. I'm definitely going to keep building with Supabase and highly recommend it to all my dev friends!

Is the free tier good enough for a small side project?

P PriyaSharma 2 months ago ✓ Best Answer
Yeah, for sure. I've had a few small apps running on it for months without hitting any limits.

Same. My personal site runs fine on free.

Free tier is solid for testing things out. You can always upgrade to Pro later if you need more.

That's my plan if it takes off.

S SnehaGupta 2 months ago
Depends on your usage. If you're doing heavy stuff, you'll hit the storage or egress limits fast.
6
S SnehaGupta 2 months ago
Yeah, like lots of file uploads or constant real-time updates.

What kind of heavy stuff? Just CRUD ops for a few users?

Anyone tried using pgvector with Supabase for some AI projects? Curious about performance and ease of integration.

A AmitD 3 weeks ago ✓ Best Answer
Yeah, I'm playing around with it for a small RAG application. Setup was pretty straightforward, just enable the extension. Performance seems decent for smaller datasets, but haven't pushed it to millions of vectors yet.

T TechRaj 3 weeks ago
Good to know! What kind of embedding model are you using?
5

Are you using Edge Functions to generate embeddings or something else?

Haven't tried it myself, but following. Seems like a cool feature to have directly in Postgres.

Curious how it scales.

T TechRaj 3 weeks ago
Definitely reduces complexity if you can keep your data together.
2
P PoojaR 3 weeks ago
I'm curious about this too. Was thinking of moving some vector stuff over from Pinecone to Supabase to keep everything in one place. Any quirks with indexing or search performance?
8
R Rahul87 3 weeks ago
I heard there can be issues with very high dimensionality vectors? Not sure if that's still the case.
7
A AmitD 3 weeks ago
Indexing is standard Postgres, so B-tree indexes for IDs, etc. For vector search, it's about `ivfflat` indices. It's not as optimized for vector search as a dedicated vector DB, but good enough for many use cases.

Anyone know how to get Supabase startup credits?

C CodeWizard 2 months ago ✓ Best Answer
Check out AWS Activate, they often have Supabase credits there. Or Product Hunt sometimes.

Is it worth upgrading to the Pro plan from the free tier?

A ArjunSoni 3 weeks ago ✓ Best Answer
Depends on your usage. If you're hitting limits on storage or bandwidth, then yeah, Pro is worth it. Also get backups.
20
P PoojaShah 3 weeks ago
The daily backups alone made it worth it for me.
0
S SnehaRao 3 weeks ago
Do they have startup credits? Maybe check that first.

I upgraded for the increased API requests. Free tier limits were too tight.

I'd check the pricing page for what you're actually using. Sometimes you just need a bit more storage, not the full Pro features.
